CPSC Recalls Squishy Toys from 3 Brands Over Water Bead Ingestion Risk as Federal Rule Takes Effect
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled squishy toys from ABC Trading, OKK Trading and Toyworld168 because the water beads inside expand beyond permitted sizes, posing a risk of serious injury or death if swallowed by children. The recalls stem directly from the federal water bead safety standard that took effect on March 12, 2026 — the compliance bar for squishies and sensory toys has been raised in earnest.
The recall list: 3 brands, 4 products
The products covered by the recall include:
- ABC Trading: Squishy Dumpling Toys and Crazy Squib Ball Toys;
- Toyworld168: Rainbow Mystery Squishy Bun Toys;
- OKK Trading: also Rainbow Mystery Squishy Bun Toys.
According to the CPSC, the water beads in these products can expand to roughly 100 times their original size in water, creating fatal choking and intestinal obstruction risks if swallowed. Consumers are advised to stop using the products immediately and contact the sellers for a refund.
Background: three hard requirements of the federal water bead rule
The CPSC announced and implemented the federal water bead safety standard in March: water beads can expand up to 100 times their size in water, making them extremely hazardous if swallowed. The rule imposes three core requirements — limits on post-expansion size, restrictions on specific chemicals, and mandatory clear warning labels. Water beads manufactured after March 12, 2026 that do not meet the standard cannot legally be sold in the U.S., which is the direct basis for the current recalls. CPSC Acting Chairman Peter Feldman stressed: "Many water beads are manufactured overseas and imported into the United States. Companies that fail to comply will face the full weight of CPSC enforcement."
Data and health risks: why water beads are under strict control
According to CPSC data, approximately 7,000 water bead ingestion injuries were treated in the U.S. between 2018 and 2022; testing also found that water beads contain acrylamide, a known carcinogen, violating the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. Water beads are not an isolated issue — a viral TikTok challenge this spring that encouraged children to microwave gel-filled squishy toys resulted in severe burns and scarring for several children; early summer also saw a UK recall of Samsons Cash & Carry squeezy dumplings over excess benzene, a serious chemical risk. The sensory toy category is now under the microscope.
Industry takeaway: promo channels and exporters are affected too
ASI specifically reminds the industry that squishies are not only hot in retail but also a popular pick for the promotional products (promo) sector. Suppliers and distributors should immediately audit products on sale and in stock: whether water-bead-containing styles meet the rule's three requirements on size, chemicals and labeling; for items already sold, proactively notify customers of the risk and handle returns or exchanges. For exporters, water-bead or gel-core squishies entering the U.S. market must complete compliance verification under the CPC framework — do not count on luck.
